Last week I was watching abc7 Eyewitness News Los Angeles and noticed as the anchor Leslie Sykes was broadcasting a story, her makeup job looked gorgeous. Yes, even amidst often times unhappy news stories, when you are a fashion and makeup buff, you notice the cosmetics and clothing of people on TV and in the movies. For the fashion buffs, think Holland Taylor on Two and a Half Men. She was always impeccably dressed.

On this particular newscast, Leslie Sykes was wearing blue shades of eye shadow with a pinkish/lavender frosted lipstick. She looked beautiful and her makeup job was perfection. Almost as a throwback to the 1980s (as so much of these fashion and beauty trends are popular today in 2018), this color combination worked well and looked stylish and regal. Although I love all colors and shades of eye shadows and lipsticks, blue eye shadow and pink or lavender lips has always been my favorite combination. With my alabaster skin, blond hair and blue eyes, I feel the most like myself when I stick to wearing these lovely cosmetic colors.

Eye shadow is a cosmetic that is applied on the eyelids and under the eyebrows. Eye shadow makes your eyes stand out and look more attractive by adding depth and dimension to your eyes, complementing your eye color, making your eyes appear larger, or simply drawing attention to your eyes. Eye shadow comes in many different colors and textures and is usually made from a powder and mica, but can also be found in liquid, pencil, cream or mousse form. Popular shades of eye shadow include brown, gold, purple, lavender, pink, green and of course various hues of blue.

Lipstick is a cosmetic product containing pigments, oils, waxes and emollients that apply color, texture, and protection to the lips. Lipsticks come in many colors and are generally found in matte (dry) and gloss (wet) formats. Dark red was one of the most popular lipstick shades throughout the 19th and 20th century. In the early 1930s, Elizabeth Arden began to introduce different lipstick colors. She inspired other companies to introduce different shades of lipsticks and lip glosses as well. Today, you can find lipsticks in almost all colors, including blue, green, black and brown, yet the most standard colors are reds, pinks, purples, golds and oranges.

Lipstick Fun Fact: Frost lipsticks are making a comeback. Shimmery or frosty lipsticks may contain mica, silica, synthetic pearl particles, such as bismuth oxychloride, to give them a glittery or shimmering shine. Lipstick is made from grinding and heating ingredients, then heated waxes are added to the mix for texture. Oils and lanolin are added for specific formula requirements. Afterwards, the hot liquid is poured into a metal mold and the mixture is chilled. Once they have hardened, they are heated in flame for half a second to create a shiny finish and to remove imperfections.

Eye Shadow Fun Fact: Depending on skin tone, the effect of eye shadow usually brings out glamour and gains attention. Natural eye shadow can range anywhere from a glossy shine to your eyelids, to a pinkish tone, or even a silver look. Eye shadow can be applied in a wide variety of ways depending upon the desired look and formulation. The most important aspect of applying eye shadow is blending well, however, I find blunt, dramatic applications of eye shadow to look bold and sexy, especially for evening wear.

Blue eye shadows and pink lipsticks make a 2018 splash – but never go out of style!

Cosmetics are lovely and attractive. Makeup has been used for as long as there have been people to use them. Face painting is mentioned in the Old Testament (Book of Ezekiel 23:40) and eye shadow was used in Egyptian burial dating back to 10,000 BC. The word “cosmatae” was first used to describe Roman’s whose duty was to bathe men and women in perfume.

From eye shadow, to lipstick, to blush, to perfume, when it comes to cosmetics, make sure to make room! Your cosmetic bag and your gorgeous makeup application will thank you!

Let’s face it, no matter how much you love life and live it with gusto, all of us at times need to take a break from it all and just slow down. If this is how you feel, then by all means, lose yourself in social media and play away.

Colored Mascara: Alluring, intriguing, attractive! Enjoy the colorful, festive eyelash feast!

Mascara Fun Fact: Mascara is a cosmetic commonly used to enhance the eyelashes. Mascara may darken, thicken, lengthen and define the eyelashes. Normally in one of three forms – liquid, cake or cream – the modern mascara product has various formulas; however, most contain the same basic components of pigments, oils, waxes and preservatives.
Colorful eyelashes that make your eyes say “wow”!

Nancy Mangano’s Colored Mascara Fashion Tip: Although most people apply black or brown shades of mascara, wearing colorful mascara that either highlights or matches your eye color is beautiful and fun! This accentuates your eyes and causes them to pop, much like a gorgeous picture frame sets off a photograph!
Mascara Fun Fact: Mascara is defined as a cosmetic substance for darkening, lengthening, curling, coloring and thickening the eyelashes. Mascara is applied with a brush or a rod and can be used on the eyebrows as well.
Colored mascara will make your eyes look swell!

Cosmetic Fun Fact: Aesthetic adornment is a cultural universal and mascara can be documented in ancient Egypt. Records from around 4000 BC refer to a substance called kohl that was used to darken eyelashes, eyes and eyebrows. Often composed of galena, malachite and charcoal or soot, honey and water was added to keep the kohl from running. Through Egypt’s influence, kohl usage persisted in the Babylonian, Greek and Roman Empires.
Following the fall of the Roman Empire, kohl fell into disuse on the European continent, where it had been considered solely a cosmetic, however, it continued to be widely used in the Middle East for religious purposes. Ingredients in modern mascara include pigmentation, oils and waxes. Which ingredients are chosen relies on how the mascara is manufactured.

Types of oils used to make mascara are mineral oils, linseed oil, castor oil, eucalyptus oil, lanolin, oil of turpentine and sesame oil. Waxes usually found in mascara are paraffin wax, carnauba was and beeswax.
Be the queen in eyelashes so colorful you’ll stand out and be seen!

Let loose and have some fun wearing colored mascara whether you have an easy day or a hectic day on the run!
“I love the color of your eyes, so gorgeous and green.”
“I believe it’s my green mascara that makes my eyes so cool and serene.”
“On closer inspection, I do believe that it is your colored mascara that caught my eye.”
“The eyes always have it when you color them up. You should give it a try.”
“Glamorous, decorated eyes are a beautiful sight to behold.”
“Colored mascara adds oomph and wow to the eyes, I’ve been told!”
Colored Mascara: Mesmerizing, breathtaking and bold!

In fashion, color can make or break a garment. The same dress can look sensual and elegant in black, yet youthful and cheery in yellow. One color that tends not to dominate the fashion world, yet stands out when you see it worn, is pink.
Whether you prefer to go daring and bold and dress head-to-toe pink, or you choose to offset your white outfit with pink pumps and a pink purse, the color pink in fashion is grand…don’t you think?

Pink Fun Fact: Pink is a pale red color, a combination of red and white. Pink was first used as a color name in the late 17th century. The color pink is named after the flowers, pinks.
Variations of the Color Pink:

  1. Blush – Similar to skin color, a pale pink.
  2. Fuschia – A blend of deep pink and blue.
  3. Hot Pink – Neon pink, a striking pink.
  4. Orchid – A lavender pink.
  5. Pastel Pink – A soft, muted pink.
  6. Rose Pink – A deep, rich pink.
  7. Salmon Pink – A touch of orange to offset the pink.

No matter the shade of pink that you’re dressed in, when you strut down the street in striking pink you’ll bat a definite fashion win!

Pink Fun Fact: In color psychology, the color pink represents compassion, nurturing and love. Pink relates to unconditional love and understanding, and the giving and receiving of nurturing. The ‘red’ in pink contains the need for action, while the mix of ‘white’ helps pink achieve the potential for success.
Pink clothing exudes femininity and romance, affection and intimacy.
The power of pink in fashion: pleasing, pretty and passionate!

Positive Keywords Associated with the Color Pink:

  1. Unconditional Love
  2. Romantic Love
  3. Compassion
  4. Understanding
  5. Nurturing
  6. Romance
  7. Warmth
  8. Hope
  9. Calming
  10. Sweetness
  11. Naiveté
  12. Femininity
  13. Intuitive Energy

Pink Fun Fact: The color pink has been described in literature since ancient times. Pink wasn’t a common color in the fashion of Middle Ages; nobles preferred brighter reds, such as crimson. However, the color pink did appear in women’s fashion, and in religious art. In the high Renaissance painting the Madonna of the Pinks by Raphael, the Christ child is presenting a pink flower to the Virgin Mary. The pink was a symbol of marriage, showing a spiritual marriage between the mother and child.

As far as accessories (which always make or break an outfit), I tend to favor pink purses and pink high heels. These two pink accessories together say “I’m confident”, “I’m fashion fabulous”, “I’m fashion fun”!

Pink Fashion Fun Fact: The golden age of the color pink entering mainstream fashion was the Rococo Period (1720-1777) in the 18th century, when pastel colors became very fashionable in all the courts of Europe. Pink was particularly championed by Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), the mistress of King Louis XV of France, who wore combinations of pale blue and pink, and had a particular tint of pink made for her by the Sevres porcelain factory, created by adding nuances of blue, pink and yellow.
The color pink can signify good health, being ‘in the pink’ and success, as in ‘everything’s rosy’.
Pink clothing, whether shocking or pastel, when wrapped in pink you’ll look youthful, sweet and well!

For a color of clothing that is sure to lighten and lift your mood, go with a full set of pink: style, playfulness and attitude!
“I’m going to an amazing dinner party next week and I’m thinking of wearing black.”
“You will look magnificent no doubt, but you’ll blend in to the back.”
“Perhaps you’re right. There will probably be more black dresses than I can count.”
“I say wear any shade of pink…you’ll look unique and you’ll certainly stand out.”
“Maybe I’ll wear pink chiffon…or find a neon satin or silk pink dress.”
“Go full fashion pink…add pink earrings, a pink necklace, dress pink to impress!”
Pink Clothing: All fashion divas oughta wear pink, don’t you think?

For most high schoolers, May is the month of gearing up to study for finals, planning summer vacations and celebrating that the school year is coming to a close by attending the famous dance known as “prom.”
A prom is a semi-formal (black tie) dance or gathering of high school students. The prom is typically held near the end of the junior and senior year. Proms figure greatly in popular culture and are major events among high school students. The event is often a combined junior/senior dance.
A popular tradition at prom, besides exchanging corsages and boutonnieres, are formal, gorgeous, glorious dresses and gowns to be worn by the females.

Prom Fun Fact: At a prom, a Prom King and Prom Queen may be revealed. These are honorary titles awarded to students elected in a school-wide vote prior to the prom, and these titles are generally awarded to seniors. Other students may be honored with inclusion in a “Prom Court.” The Prom King and Prom Queen are often given crowns to wear. Members of the Prom Court may be given sashes to wear and photographed together.
In the early days of high school proms, the nighttime dance served a function similar to a debutante ball. Early proms were times of firsts: the first adult social event for teenagers; the first time taking the family car or fancy limousine out after dark; the first real dress up affair, etc., similar to a milestone event such as a First Holy Communion or a wedding.
2017-Prom-Evening-Dresses-Burgundy-Velour-Top-Organza-Skirt-A-Line-Dark-Red-Formal-Prom-Gowns

Prom Fun Fact: Usage of the term ‘prom’ is becoming more common around the world and appears to be a colloquial and regional practice. Formal English usage suggests “Prom” is a noun and should be preceded by an article, although it is often not a practice. “Prom” is a shortened version of promenade.
Popular Prom Attire:

  1. Girls wear traditional ladies’ dresses or evening gowns and adorn themselves with fancy jewelry such as earrings and a necklace. Girls often wear perfume, makeup, lipstick and blush. Girls also wear a corsage (either wrist or pin-on) given to them by their prom dates. Many times girls have their hair professionally styled for their big night.
  2. Boys often dress in black or white formal wear, sometimes paired with ties or bow ties with vests, in some cases in colors matching their date’s dress. Boys are given matching boutonnieres to be worn on their lapels by their dates.

clarisse-prom-dress-2566-61
Prom Fun Fact: After the prom, parents or a community may host a “prom after-party” at a restaurant, entertainment venue or a student’s home. Other traditions often include trips to nearby attractions, such as amusement parks, regional or local parks, or family or rented vacation houses. Some of these post-prom events are chaperoned and some are unsupervised. Most after-prom events are held at the school, and involve bringing entertainment such as interactive games, artists and other entertainers to the school.
Always follow the golden rule: dress off the charts glam for the Prom held at school!

Prom Fun Fact: The concept of extending prom to homeschooled students has increased in recent years. Although some school districts in the United States and Canada allow homeschool students to attend prom in the school district where they reside, many homeschool groups also organize their own proms. Some states, such as Oregon, Ohio, Georgia, Tennessee and Michigan also host statewide homeschool proms, which any homeschool student is welcome to attend. Glorious!
Primped and poised for a perfect prom!

Although all of these prom dresses are beautiful, I am particularly fond of this off-the-shoulder, sleek dress in the baby doll pink. I love the dainty look, the silk fabric and the mermaid style cut! Stunning!

The custom of the high school prom exists in many parts of the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Africa, Asia, the Honduras, Peru, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and most Caribbean countries, Uruguay and many others.
Prom Fun Fact: While high school year books didn’t start covering proms and including prom pictures until the 1930s and 1940s, historians believe proms have existed in high schools as early as the 19th century. The prom has since taken on a larger-than-life meaning for high school students.

landscape-1485895150-sev-013117-prom

As people gained more money and leisure time, proms have become more extravagant and elaborate. Junior and senior proms are often held at hotel ballrooms and country clubs, as opposed to the school gymnasium. Where arriving in a compact or standard car was once acceptable, luxury cars and limousines often transports high schoolers today. In some ways, the prom has become the pinnacle of high school events in a student’s life.
Be prom smart, dress the stylish, fashionable, gorgeous, sensational part!

Step into an evening of the high life…dress and dance away the stress and strife of homework and daily life.
“I find you to be extremely caring and nice.”
“I fit the stereotype of  a girl? Made of sugar and spice?”
“I would be honored  if you would accompany me to the Prom as my date.”
“I’m thrilled to accept your invitation. I’m excited and can hardly wait.”
“When you select your gown let me know the colors so we can match.”
“We’ll make a fabulous, fashionable pair. With you I have a great catch!”
Dress prom perfect: Steal the fashion scene from the king and queen!

Hair is one of the most defining characteristics of mammals, including humans. Hair is a protein filament that grows from follicles around the dermis, or skin. The human body, apart from areas of glabrous skin, is covered in follicles which produce thick terminal and fine vellus hair. Although hair growth such as beards and moustaches are admired, it is most notably heads of hair that people pay the most attention to. Whether your head of hair preference is short, medium or long, our love of hair stands strong. For those that prefer bald heads, bald is beautiful!
Attitudes towards different hair, such as hairstyles and hair removal, vary widely across different cultures and historical periods, but hair can be used or worn to indicate a person’s personal beliefs or social position, such as their age, sex or religion.
Although all hairstyles are fabulous, for this particular fashion post I am going to feature sleek, straight, silky hair. Whether you wear it from here to there.

54a976eb7302f_-_elle-50-march-beauty-best-in-show-sleek-0313-xln-xln

Sleek, straight hair can be worn with all cuts, no matter the length. Whether you obtain the straight look using a blow dryer, a flat iron or a curling iron, there is no denying that sleek, straight hair with a glistening shine looks sexy, sensual, stylish, divine!
Hair Fun Fact: The word hair refers to two distinct structures: the hair follicle and the shaft. Hair fibers have a structure consisting of several layers, starting from the outside: the cuticle, cortex and medulla.
Sleek, straight, glamorous hair should be worn like a crown, whether you’re dressed in jeans, office attire or a gorgeous evening gown!
c6230e53b790a22c3e4ee924589f21d0

Preferred Ways to Get Polished, Sleek, Straight, Perfect Hair:

  1. Shampoo and condition your hair. If your hair is prone to frizzing, a frizz-reducing shampoo is helpful.
  2. Use a boar bristle hairbrush to avoid breakage.
  3. Towel dry your hair and allow your hair to air dry until damp. Blow drying and using a flat iron on soaking wet hair can damage the hair, along with your hair taking longer to dry and style.
  4. If you choose to obtain sleek, straight hair with only a blow dryer (this does work, I do it on my hair) hold the blow dryer at the top of your head and run your brush straight down from the scalp to the end of the hair. I don’t even let the blow dryer touch my hair, I merely blow the hot air close enough that the hair straightens and dries as I keep the blow dryer at the same position as the brush, the entire way down.  Do this section by section.
  5. If using a flat iron or ceramic -plated iron, straighten sections of hair one at a time. Insert each section into the iron, clamp down and pull straight down, again going from the scalp to the ends of your hair. Careful, too much of this can burn and break your hair.
  6. Once you’ve straightened and styled your hair, add a touch of hairspray, smoothing cream and/or hair gloss for a perfect look and shine.

You have a fantastic head of hair – I wish your hair were mine!
Fashion straight talk – sleek, straight hair on the catwalk!

Whether you prefer a part down the middle, a part on either the left or right side, no part, bangs or no bangs, sleek, straight sexy hair highlights your face like no other hairstyle can.
Hair Fun Fact: Hair exists in a variety of textures. Three main aspects of hair texture are the curl pattern, volume and consistency.  Being knowledgeable of your hair type is a good start to knowing how to properly take care of your hair. Please note, it is normal to have more than one kind of hair type, for instance having a mixture of wave and curls.
Andre Walker, hairstylist for Oprah Winfrey, came up with the Andre Walker hair typing system to classify hair types.
The Andre Walker Hair Types System:

  1. Type 1 Straight Hair: Reflects the most sheen and is also the most resilient hair of all hair types.
  2. Type 2 Wavy Hair: The texture and sheen range between straight and curly hair. Wavy hair is more likely to frizz than straight hair.
  3. Type 3 Curly Hair: The curl pattern may resemble a lowercase ‘s’, uppercase ‘S’, or an uppercase ‘Z’. This hair type is usually voluminous and climate prone.

Hair Fun Fact: All natural hair colors are the result of two types of hair pigments. Both of these pigments are melanin types, produced inside the hair follicle and packed into granules found in fibers. Eumelanin is the dominant pigment in brown hair and black hair, while pheomelanin is the dominant pigment in red hair. Blond hair is the result of having little pigmentation in the hair strand. Gray hair occurs when melanin production decreases or stops, while poliosis is hair, typically in spots, that never possessed melanin at all.

The root of the hair ends in an enlargement, the hair bulb, which is whiter in color and softer in texture than the shaft, and is lodged in a follicular involution of the epidermis called the hair follicle. Bulb of hair layers consist of fibrous connective tissue, glassy membrane, external root sheath, internal root sheath composed of epithelium stratum and granular stratum, cuticle, cortex and medulla of hair.
Who knew that each strand of hair was so magnificent and needed so much care? Hair maintenance involves so much more than merely deciding how to wear your hair!

Hair Fun Fact: While it is the hair follicle shape that determines curl patterns, it is the hair follicle size that determines the thickness. While the circumference of the hair follicle expands, so does the thickness of the hair follicle. As a result, a person’s hair volume can be thin, normal or thick. Hair consistency can be grouped into three categories: fine, medium and coarse.
Be happy and proud of your natural head of hair, whether fine, medium or coarse and let mother nature run her course.
Of course, changing up the styles and the length of your hair can bring mounds of fun, enjoyment and a change in looks, if you dare!

Diamonds aren’t only a girl’s best friend…guys love the stunning, sparkling gems too!
Diamond jewelry has long been loved, admired and coveted by people. A diamond is a metastable allotrope of carbon, where the carbon atoms are arranged in a variation of the face-centered cubic crystal structure called a diamond lattice. A diamond is less stable than graphite, but the conversion rate from diamond to graphite is negligible at standard conditions.
A diamond is renowned as a material with superlative physical qualities, most of which originate from the strong covalent bonding between its atoms. In particular, a diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any bulk material.

Diamond Fun Fact: Most natural diamonds are formed at high temperature and pressure at depths of 140 to 190 kilometers (87 to 118 mi) in the Earth’s mantle. Carbon-containing minerals provide the carbon source, and the growth occurs over periods from 1 billion to 3.3 billion years (25% to 75% of the age of the Earth). Diamonds are brought close to the Earth’s surface through deep volcanic eruptions by magma, which cools into igneous rocks knowns as kimberlites and lamproites.
Diamonds can also be produced synthetically in a HPHT method which approximately stimulates the conditions in the Earth’s mantle. An alternative, and completely different growth technique, is chemical vapor deposition.
Whether your diamonds are natural or synthetic, drape yourself in diamonds for a royal, regal, lavish fit!

Diamond Fun Fact: The name diamond is derived from the ancient Greek adamas, meaning proper, unalterable, unbreakable, untamed. Diamonds are thought to have first been recognized and mined in India, where significant alluvial deposits of the stone could be found many centuries ago along the rivers Penner, Krishna and Godavari. Diamonds have been known in India for at least 6,000 years.
Diamond jewelry has long been loved and lavished by people for centuries, and revered in countries all around the world.

Marketing has significantly affected the image of the diamond as a valuable commodity. N. W. Ayer & Son, the advertising firm detained by De Beers in the mid-20th century, succeeded in reviving the American diamond market. The firm created new markets in countries where no diamond tradition had existed before. N. W. Ayer’s marketing included product placement, advertising focused on the diamond product itself rather than from the De Beers brand, and associations with celebrities and royalty.
Today, diamonds signify wealth, affluence, romance, love and commitment. Marriage anyone? Say it with diamonds for excitement and fun when you’ve found your special one!

Mined rough diamonds are converted into gems through a multi-step process called “cutting.” Diamonds are extremely hard, but also brittle and can be split by a single blow. Therefore, diamond cutting is considered a delicate procedure requiring skills, scientific knowledge, tools and experience.
Issues Considered When Cutting Diamonds:

  1. The hardness of the diamond and the gem’s ability to cleave strongly depend on the crystal orientation. The crystallographic structure of the diamond to be cut is analyzed using X-ray diffraction to choose optimal cutting directions.
  2. Most diamonds contain visible non-diamond inclusions and crystal flaws. The cutter has to decide which flaws are to be removed by the cutting and which could be kept.
  3. The diamond can be split by a single, well calculated blow of a hammer to a pointed tool, which is quick, but risky. It can also be cut with d diamond saw, which is a more reliable but tedious procedure.

After the initial cutting, the diamond is shaped in numerous stages of polishing, which can be performed by technicians.

Diamond Fun Fact: The conditions for diamond formation to happen in the lithospheric mantle occur at considerable depth corresponding to the requirements of temperature and pressure. Those depths are estimated between 140 and 190 kilometers (87 and 118 mi), though occasionally diamonds have crystallized at depths about 300 kilometers (190 mi).
