Halloween

The month of October has arrived and fall is in the air. Halloween will be here soon to give us all a scare!

Ghosts, goblins and ghouls. Witches, black cats and broomsticks. Princesses, fairies and queens. Vampires, zombies and Elvira. If it exists (and even if it doesn’t) Halloween is a time to dress up in costume as anyone or anything that your creative brain dreams up.

Halloween is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. Halloween begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs and all the faithful departed believers.
According to many scholars, All Hallows’ Eve is a Christianized feast influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, with possible pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain. Other scholars maintain that Halloween originated independently of Samhain and has solely Christian roots.

Festive Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, decorating, carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing and divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories and watching gory, creepy horror movies.

Halloween Fun Fact: In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows’ Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although in other locations, these solemn customs are less pronounced in favor of a more commercial and secular celebration.

Trick-or-Treat. How much delightful tasting candy can you eat?

Yum, yum, yum!

The word Halloween dates to about 1745 and is of Christian origin. The word Halloween means hallowed evening or holy evening. It comes from a Scottish term for All Hallows’ Eve (the evening before All Hallows’ Day). In Scots, the word eve is even, and this is contracted to e’en or een. Over time, All Hallows’ Eve evolved into Halloween.

Development of artifacts and symbols associated with Halloween formed over time. Jack-o-lanterns are traditionally carried by guisers on All Hallows’ Eve in order to frighten evil spirits. There is a popular Irish Christian folktale associated with the jack-o-lantern, which in folklore, is said to represent a “soul who has been denied entry into both heaven and hell.”

So carve your pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns that are scary, monstrous, cute, weird or spooky. Whatever is on your mind, your jack-o-lantern is one of a kind!

Halloween costumes are traditionally modeled after supernatural figures such as vampires, monsters, ghosts, skeletons and witches. Over time, in the United States, costume selection extended to include popular characters from fiction, celebrities and generic archetypes such as ninjas and princesses.

Costuming became popular for Halloween parties in the United States in the early 20th century, as often for adults as for children. The first mass-produced Halloween costumes appeared in stores in the 1930s when trick-or-treating became popular in America.

Have a happy hoot of a Halloween!

Halloween Fun Fact: The yearly New York Halloween Parade, begun in 1974 by puppeteer and mask maker Ralph Lee of Greenwich Village, is the world’s largest Halloween parade, and one of America’s only major nighttime parades (along with Poland’s Starlight Parade), attracting more than 60,000 costumed participants, two million spectators, and a worldwide television audience of over 100 million! Party down people and join in the Halloween parade pandemonium!

Yummy Delicious Foods Associated with Halloween:

  1. Candy, Candy and More Candy (Chocolates, candy corn, penny candies, lifesavers)
  2. Barmbrack
  3. Bonfire Toffee
  4. Candy Apples
  5. Candy Corn
  6. Pumpkin Pudding, Pumpkin Pies and Pumpkin Bread
  7. Caramel Apples
  8. Caramel Corn
  9. Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
  10. Roasted Sweet Corn

So dress in your favorite costume, carve downright darling jack-0-lanterns and fill numerous bags with trick-or-treat goodies! Have a grand, ghoul of time!

Halloween Fun Fact: Haunted attractions are entertainment venues designed to thrill and scare patrons. Most attractions are seasonal Halloween businesses. Some thrill attractions include haunted houses, corn mazes, hayrides, and amusement park makeovers such as Knott’s Berry Farm’s Knott’s Scary Farm, along with Disneyland and Universal Studios haunted theme parks.

Haunted attractions in the United States bring in an estimated $300-$500 million each year. This maturing and growth within the industry has led to technically more advanced special effects and costuming, comparable with that of Hollywood films.

The telling of ghost stories and viewing of horror films are common fixtures of Halloween parties. Episodes of television series and Halloween themed specials are commonly aired on or before Halloween, while new horror films are often released theatrically before Halloween to take advantage of the spooky, monster charged atmosphere.

Don’t get too scared!

Have a sweet treat Halloween and share some delicious candy with every costumed creature that you meet!

Paisley prints look fun, exciting, colorful and whimsical. One might even describe paisley fabrics as magical and dreamy.
Paisley print pandemonium!
The Paisley pattern is a term for a design using the ‘buta’ or ‘botch’, a droplet-shaped vegetable motif of Persian origin. Buta is an almond-shaped ornament with a sharp-curved upper edge. Such designs became very popular in the West in the 18th and 19th centuries, following imports of post-Mughal versions of the design from India, especially in the form of Kashmir shawls, and were then imitated locally.

Resembling a twisted teardrop, the fig-shaped paisley is of Persian origin, but its western name derives from the town of Paisley, in West Scotland, a center for textiles where paisley designs were produced. Some design scholars believe it is the convergence of a stylized floral spray and a cypress tree: a Zoroastrian symbol of life and eternity.
Paisley Print Fun Fact: The floral motif was originated in the Sassanid Dynasty and later in the Safavid Dynasty of Persia (from 1501 to 1736), and was a major textile pattern in Iran during the Qajar and Pahlavi Dynasties. In these periods, the pattern was used to decorate royal regalia, crowns, and court garments, as well as textiles used by the general population.

Imports from the East India Company in the first half of the 17th century made paisley and other Indian patterns popular, and the Company was unable to import enough to meet the demand. Paisley was popular in the Baltic states between 1700 and 1800 and was thought to be used as a protective charm to ward off evil demons. Local manufacturers in Marseilles began to mass-produce the paisley patterns via early textile printing processes in 1640.
My oh my, when dressed in paisley prints you’ll get noticed walking by!

Paisley Park Fun Fact: Known around the world, the paisley pattern is a popular, colorful, youthful looking pattern. In addition to a fabulous fashion fabric, Paisley Park is known worldwide for music superstar Prince’s record label and recording studio, as well as living quarters.  Paisley Park was funded in part by Warner Bros. Records. It was started in 1985, following the success of a film and album Purple Rain. Paisley Park was opened to the public as a museum and memorial to Prince following his death on April 21, 2016.

Paisley Prints Fun Fact: Paisley fabrics/prints became identified with psychedelic style due to a resurgence in the pattern’s mainstream popularity leading up to the mid and late 1960s. Of particular note is the influence of The Beatles. The style was particularly popular during the Summer of Love 1967. Fender Guitars made a Pink Paisley version of their Telecaster guitar, by sticking paisley wallpaper onto the guitar bodies.
Create a fashion stint in a powerful paisley print!

Paisley Print Fun Fact: At the 2010 Winter Olympics, Azerbaijan’s team sported colorful paisley trousers. Paisley was also a favorite design element of architect Laurie Baker. He has made numerous drawings and collages of what he called ‘mango designs’. He also used to include the paisley shape in the buildings he designed.
The modern French words for paisley are boteh, cachemire and palme, palme being a reference to the palm tree, which along with the pine tree and cypress tree, is one of the traditional botanical motifs thought to have influenced the shape of the paisley element as it is now known.

Often psychedelic, always fun, dressing in paisley prints offers excitement and style for everyone!
Paisley Print Fun Fact: In addition to the loom-woven fabric, Paisley became a major site for the manufacturer of printed cotton and wool in the 19th century, according to the Scotland’s Paisley Museum and Art Gallery. The paisley pattern was being printed, rather than woven, on to other textiles, including cotton squares which were the precursors of the modern bandana. The key places of printing paisley were Britain and the Alsace region of France.
We tip our paisley hats off around the globe for paisley fashions of dresses, skirts, pantsuits, shorts, blazers, pajamas and robes!

In addition to adding fashion and flair to any garment, an element of fringe (trim) adds a fun, festive look to clothing. Fringe is an ornamental textile trim applied to an edge of an item (clothing, drapes, flags, etc.).
Fringe originated as a way of preventing a cut piece of fabric from unraveling when a hemming wasn’t used. Several strands of weft threads would be removed, and the remaining warp threads would be twisted or braided together to prevent unraveling.
In the realm of fashion, fringe is a popular trend on the runway! Always stylish and in.
5075f48f336f1493cc31fa62c459c31a.jpg

Fringe Fun Fact: In modern fabrics, fringe is more commonly made separately and sewn on. Modern “add-on” fringe may consist of wool, silk, linen or narrow strips of leather. The use of fringe is ancient, and early fringes were generally made of unspun wool (rather than spun or twisted threads).
We often hear the term “runway” and “catwalk” when it comes to haute couture clothing, world wide fashion weeks, fashion shows, etc. So, for all fashion divas, what exactly does it mean when one refers to a runway show, strutting the catwalk, etc.?
Runway/Catwalk Fun Fact: In fashion, a runway, catwalk or ramp is a narrow, usually flat platform that runs into an auditorium or between sections of an outdoor seating area, used by models to demonstrate clothing and accessories during a fashion show. In fashion jargon, ‘what’s on the catwalk?’ or similar phrasing can refer to whatever is new and popular in fashion.
So, when displayed on the runway or catwalk, fringe is always in and a sure number one win!

There are many types of fringe. Particularly in Western Europe, as wealth and luxury items proliferated during the Renaissance, types of fringe began to assume commonly accepted names. Styles of fringe were clearly defined in England by at least the year 1688.
Popular Types of Fringe:

  1. Buillon Fringe: Twisted yarn that generally contains threads of silver and gold. The name derives from bullion hose, which had a twisted element at the top that resembled this type of fringe. Modern buillon fringe varies widely in texture and width, but generally is only 3 to 9 inches (7.6 to 22.9 cm) in length.
  2. Campaign Fringe: From the French word campane (meaning “bell”), consists of small, bell-like tassels on the end.
  3. Thread Fringe: Untwisted and unbraided loose warp threads.

Fashionable fringe to step out in!

Runway/Catwalk Fun Fact: Although fringe clothing is always glammed up, never basic, a runway could be as basic as a narrow space between rows of chairs or a more elaborate set up with multiple catwalks.
Most runway shows are held indoors, for shelter against the weather, but there are times when runway shows are held outdoors. In the 2016 Paris Fashion Week, Chanel presented an elaborate setup by designing the hall as if it were an airport. The viewing guests sat as if they were awaiting their flights, while the models walked around the airport approaching ticket counters.
Get a first-class ticket to some of the loveliest clothes on the market. Purchase fringe garments and let the fringe swing and sway while you walk it!
Fringe clothing works splendidly for day or night dress. Always look your fashion best!

Fringe clothing gives off an appeal of fine elegance and downhome country chic all in one! Whether you dress in fringe for the flared effect of it, or for the casual, fun, youthful look of it, when dressed in fringe you’ll always look hip and in!
Runway/Catwalk Fun Fact: When a model scores an exclusive for a fashion label, it means the model has been selected to walk for that particular designer only. An exclusive contract often launches a model’s career and elevates their status in the fashion industry, guaranteeing them spots on the world’s best catwalks.
Strut yourself down the runway of life in fun, festive, flappable fringe!

Love the fringe that you’re dolled up in!
Fringe: Always a high fashion hit on the runway!
“I normally go for an office, business type of clothing look.”
“Why not change it up a bit and wear fancy fringe? You’ll get hooked.”
“Fringe garments do look elegant and chic when the fringe swings and sways.”
“Fringe dress works for all events, fun when the tassels move every which way.”
“I wonder if my fringe attire will make it look like I’m dressing for a club?”
“And you care why? Dress to suit your personal taste, make your closet a fashion hub!”
Fringe: Delicate, flapping tassels make the clothing fun and flashy to wear. If the fringe adds a party or club look to your stylish clothes, oh fashion diva, wear it if you dare!

Since I’m on a roll with colored clothing (green, black/white), to keep in the realm of the gorgeous seasons of spring and summer, let’s highlight yellow clothing!
With the weather warming, plants growing and sun shining, now is the time to put away  your black and gray winter wardrobe and dress in lighter, brighter, bolder colors. What better color to warm your heart and uplift your mood than the beautiful color yellow?
Yellow  is the color between green and orange on the spectrum of visible light. Yellow is evoked by light with a predominant wavelength of roughly 570-590 nm. In traditional color theory used in painting, and in the subtractive color system used in color printing, yellow is a primary color! The color yellow relates to acquired knowledge, resonates with the left or logic side of the brain that stimulates mental faculties and creates mental agility and perception.

Yellow Fun Fact: The word yellow comes from the Old English ‘geolu’, meaning yellow or yellowish. It has the same Indo-European base, ‘gel’ as the word gold and yell, or cry-out.
Let’s give a cry-out and shout-out for the glorious color yellow; always in fabulous fashion no doubt!
Yellow is the lightest hue of the color spectrum, emitting uplifting and illuminating feelings, offering hope, cheerfulness and fun.
Walk, no run, to your nearest clothing store and fill your closet with yellow clothing for having fun in the mid-day sun!

Yellow Fun Fact: According to surveys in Europe, Canada and the United States, yellow is the color people most often associate with amusement, gentleness and spontaneity. The color yellow plays an important role in China, where it is seen as the color of happiness, glory, wisdom, harmony and culture.
Yellow, in the form of yellow ochre pigment made from clay, was one of the first colors used in prehistoric cave art. The cave of Lascaux has an image of a horse colored with yellow, estimated to be 17,300 years old.
When dressed in the color yellow, look magnificent, majestic and bold…never old! Even in yellowish shades of gold!

Yellow Fun Fact: Yellow is the most highly visible of all colors, which is why yellow is used for pedestrian crossings, firetrucks, road maintenance equipment, school buses and taxicabs. Yellow is often used for safety and accident prevention information, and for warning signs, since the color yellow is traditionally used to signal caution, rather than danger (Slow down as opposed to Stop)! Take note of crossings which are marked in white – they are less easy to see than those marked in yellow, particularly on wet and cloudy days.
Slow down and smell the yellow flowers – flower power! By the way, yellow is the number one color of all fresh flowers in the world.

There is no denying that these delicate pieces of jewelry are stunning. But are they practical to wear? you ask!
As a true fashion diva, my answer is yes. I am wearing one right now, as I write this blog post. I have one on my right hand, and I am right handed. I write and the fabulous piece of bling moves right along with me! The one I am wearing is made from black stones, with a black ring that goes on my middle finger, then across my hand is chain and flowers made from stones, then chain that clamps around my wrist, making the bracelet. I love my unusual piece of bling.
For those of you that follow my blog, you know how much I love fashion and style, and I wear what works for me. What others think pretty much goes out the window, as I am comfortable with my style choices for myself. Yes, I do wear my attached ring/bracelet to the grocery store when I’m in the mood! I’ve even pumped my own gas with this classy little lady flowing around my wrist and across my hand! Simply grand!

Ring/Bracelet Fun Facts: These bracelets are referred to by many terms, the most known being the slave bracelet. This divine piece of jewelry is associated with several cultures and are often times worn as belly dancing or harem jewelry. They are a favored piece of jewelry by the Gothic subculture. They are a favored piece of jewelry by me too!
These ring/bracelets are also referred to as hand flowers. Quite an appropriate name, as they do add beauty and grace to your hand and wrist, much like flowers add beauty and grace to most everything!

Other types of bracelets include charm bracelets, bangles, slap bracelets, beaded bracelets, link bracelets and karma bracelets. All bracelets are pretty and fashionable in their own right, but in my estimation, none can match the regal glamour of the attached ring/bracelet! A breathtaking sight!
Wrap your hand with the powerful, popular ring/bracelet. Jewelry done right!
Ring/Bracelet Fashion Warning: When you wear one of these eye appealing, unique pieces of jewelry, they are a major conversation piece. If you don’t want to get complimented, or you aren’t in a mood to talk to admiring strangers, wear a different piece of jewelry!
A way to achieve flamboyant and fabulous fashion fun? Wear an attached bracelet and ring! Ah, to wear this smashing bling makes a trendy gal’s heart sing!
