Happy New Year! With each new year, we bring in parties, dreams, resolutions, new beginning and hope. As is true with so many things, out with the old and in with the new.

New Year is the time in which a new calendar year begins and the calendar’s year count increments by one. Many countries celebrate the event in some manner, and the 1st day of January is often marked as a national holiday!

One sure thing about bringing in the new year are New Year’s Eve parties galore. The New Year is recognized around the world and festivities, fireworks, food and fun are celebrated worldwide. For those of you attending a party, New Year’s Eve is generally a time of dress up and feasting in fancy duds. May I suggest the always popular, never out of style, always elegant little black dress?

A little black dress (LBD) is a black evening or cocktail dress, cut simply and often quite short. Fashion historians ascribe the origins of the little black dress to the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel and Jean Patou. The dress was intended to be long lasting, versatile, affordable and accessible to the widest possible market in a neutral color.

The little black dress is considered essential to a complete wardrobe by many women and fashion observers, who believe it a rule of fashion that every woman should own a simple, elegant black dress that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. For example, worn with a blazer and pumps for daytime business wear or worn with ornate jewelry, accessories and stiletto heels for evening wear or a formal event, such as a wedding, cocktail party or ball.

The little black dress is the most stunning, glamourous and gorgeous of them all!

Little Black Dress Fun Fact: Black has always been a color rich in symbolism. In the early 18th century, black represented romance and artistry. Black is poetic and diplomatic. In the early 20th century, black was adopted by the Romantics such as Byron, Shelley, and Keats, due to its melancholic aura. As the Victorian era began, black transitioned from a color of art to one of grief and mourning – widows were expected to wear black for at least four years!

Whether in mourning or celebrating, wearing a little black dress should not be hesitating!

The little black dress: glamour and style for a mile!

Little Black Dress Fun Fact: Since the little black dress is meant to be a staple of a woman’s wardrobe for a number of years, the style of the little black dress ideally should be as simple as possible: a short black dress that is too clearly part of a trend wouldn’t qualify because it would soon appear dated in fashion.

In 1926 Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel published a picture of a short, simple black dress in American Vogue. The dress was calf length, cut straight and decorated only by a few diagonal lines. Vogue called it “Chanel’s Ford”.  Like the automaker Ford’s Model T, the little black dress was simple and accessible for women of all social classes. It was also said that the little black dress would become ‘a sort of uniform for all women of taste.’ This, as well as other designs by the house of Chanel, helped disassociate black with mourning, and reinvent it as the color of the high class, wealthy and chic.

Wear the little black dress and everyone will speak…compliments of course!

The popularity of casual fabrics, especially knits, for dress and business wear during the 1980s brought the little black dress to the forefront of fashion. The grunge culture of the 1990s saw the combination of the little black dress with both sandals and combat boots, though the dress itself remained simple in cut and fabric.

Little Black Dress Fun Fact: A number of songs are titled “Little Black Dress”, with such musical talents as The Hollies, Gavin Friday, Donnie Iris, Chris Young, Fall Out Boy’s, One Direction, Sara Bareilles, and the San Diego based roots reggae band One Drop.

You are only one step away from stepping out in the little black dress that is sure to brighten your day!

The Little Black Dress: No need to play “Who wore it best?” Every fashion diva, one and all, looks regal, royal and chic dressed in the little black dress and standing tall!

“Are you going to a New Year’s Eve cocktail party? I heard they are all the rage.”

“I’ll be making a stunning entrance in a little black dress…I’ll take center stage.”

“I’ll accompany you and wear a black pin striped suit…we’ll turn every head.”

“I’ll accessorize with diamond earrings, a diamond choker and a clutch that is red.”

“Splendid. And may I ask what will be on your feet as we dance the night away?”

“Six inch stiletto black patent leather heels that will shine as we swing and sway!”

The Little Black Dress: Make no mistake about it. The little black dress will always stand out from the rest! Fashion at its best!
